The original settlement sits on the south side of the Homosassa River, about three miles west of Homosassa Springs by either West Fishbowl Drive or West Yulee Drive: and those two roads are effectively how tree crews reach most of old Homosassa. This is spring country. Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is built around the spring where the river begins, and the warm water is why manatees winter here in numbers. What that means for trees is ground that holds water and a canopy that has grown up in permanently damp soil, which favors species that tolerate wet feet and punishes ones that do not. Homosassa also carries some genuinely old ground. David Levy Yulee established a 5,000-acre sugar plantation on the river in 1851, and the mill ruins are preserved as the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park. Land that was cleared for cane and citrus a century and a half ago and then left to come back has a different tree population than land that was never cleared: more fast-growing, shorter-lived species, which is exactly the population that needs the most attention as it ages.
