Tree removal in Citrus County, town by town
Who sets the tree rules in each Citrus County town
The answer to a permit question changes from one town to the next, so check this table before you rely on what a neighbour was told. We never confirm a permit ourselves.
| Town | Who sets the rules | Tell us first |
|---|---|---|
| Crystal River | The city inside its limits, Citrus County outside them | Water frontage and truck access |
| Inverness | The City of Inverness | How near the tree is to the right-of-way |
| Homosassa | Citrus County | Your street address, since Homosassa Springs is a separate place about 3 miles away |
| Beverly Hills | Citrus County | Your street address, since the Pine Ridge line is hard to see |
| Lecanto | Citrus County | Roadside on State Road 44, or on acreage |
| Hernando | Citrus County, with no city government | Distance to the water and the route from the road |
How Citrus County splits for tree work
Three roads, three kinds of ground
Citrus County runs on three roads. U.S. 19 carries the coast, State Road 44 crosses the middle, and U.S. 41 follows the lakes inland. Where you sit on those roads tells us more about your tree than the street name does.
- Crystal River and Homosassa sit on U.S. 19, about seven miles apart by road. Both have river and canal frontage, a high water table and storm exposure straight off the Gulf. Hurricane Helene put about ten feet of surge into Citrus County in September 2024, so a tree that stood in salt water gets its roots and bark checked before anyone trusts it again.
- State Road 44, the Gulf to Lake Highway, ties the county together. It runs seven miles from Crystal River to Lecanto and ten more to Inverness, and Lecanto is the natural staging point for work in the interior. The ground inland is higher and the trees are usually better anchored, so more of the calls there are about size and closeness to the house than about a tree that is failing.
- U.S. 41 runs north through Inverness and Hernando, five miles apart, toward Dunnellon. This is lake country on the Tsala Apopka chain, where saturated soil loosens root plates and equipment has to stay on firm ground. County Road 491 and County Road 486 link that side of the county back to Beverly Hills and Lecanto.
Permits: ask the right office
Tree rules in Citrus County depend on who governs the parcel. Crystal River and Inverness each have a city ordinance, and Inverness has held Tree City USA recognition every year since 1995. Homosassa, Lecanto, Beverly Hills and Hernando have no city ordinance, so their rules come from unincorporated Citrus County. Hernando once had a city government and gave it up.
We do not issue or confirm permits. For a parcel in unincorporated Citrus County the answer comes from the Citrus County Building Division, and for a parcel inside Crystal River or Inverness it starts at city hall. Our guide to tree removal permits in Citrus County walks through how the question works, and Dunnellon, over the Marion County line, has its own rules on its town page.
Tree services we run across Citrus County
Every service on this list is available in all six towns.
- Tree removal: Taken down in sections where the lot is tight, hauled out, and the site left clean.
- Tree trimming and pruning: Deadwood, overextended limbs and clearance cuts, best done before June.
- Emergency tree removal: Limbs on roofs and trunks across driveways, cleared as fast as we can get a crew to you.
- Stump grinding: Ground below grade so the spot can be sodded, planted or paved.
- Tree health assessment: A read on whether a tree is failing, treatable or fine before you pay to remove it.
- Tree cabling and bracing: Hardware support for split trunks and weak unions, when you want to keep the tree.
- Lot clearing: Trees, brush and undergrowth cleared off larger parcels, to the line you mark.
- Tree planting: Species chosen to survive Florida wind, sand and salt.
Storm season, quotes and distances in Citrus County
Storm season sets the calendar
The National Weather Service dates summer thunderstorm season in west central Florida from May 25 to October 10, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Those months wet the lakeside ground and put wind on shallow roots at the same time. Deadwood and overextended limbs are the cheap jobs, and they are cheapest before June.
After a storm in Citrus County, tell us what is touching what. A limb resting on a roof comes first, a limb hung up in a canopy second, and a trunk across a driveway third. Anything touching a power line is the utility's job, and we take the tree once the line is confirmed clear.
What a Citrus County quote depends on
How a truck reaches the tree drives the price more than the height of the tree does. Canal and waterfront lots on the coast often mean rigging a tree down in sections. Lakefront lots in Inverness are long and narrow with one path beside the house, and compact lots in Beverly Hills leave no room for a free drop.
When you call, tell us the route from the road to the tree and how close the water is, whether that is a Kings Bay canal or a Tsala Apopka shoreline. We quote on site, in writing, before any work starts. There are no payment plans, and we take cards and cash wherever we work.
How close the six towns sit
The six towns are near each other. Measured in a straight line between town centres (geocoded 2026-08-18, so not drive times), Lecanto is about 5 miles from Beverly Hills and about 7 from Crystal River, Inverness is about 5 from Hernando, and Homosassa is about 9 from Lecanto. Distance changes scheduling more than it changes the quote.
If your town is not on this page, call anyway. We would rather tell you honestly that a place is outside our range than quote a job we cannot service well.

Tree service in Citrus County, FL: frequently asked questions
Which towns in Citrus County does Broadway Tree Care serve?
Crystal River, Inverness, Homosassa, Beverly Hills, Lecanto and Hernando, and each has its own page. We also take jobs in Citrus Springs, Pine Ridge, Citrus Hills, Black Diamond and Homosassa Springs, and over the county line in Dunnellon.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Citrus County?
It depends on who governs the parcel. Crystal River and Inverness each set their own tree ordinance. In unincorporated Citrus County the Citrus County Building Division gives the answer, not us, and our permit guide explains how the question works.
Is Dunnellon part of Citrus County?
No. Dunnellon is in Marion County, north of Hernando on U.S. 41, and it sets its own tree ordinance. We work there on our regular run and it has its own page.
When is storm season in Citrus County, and when should a tree be checked?
The National Weather Service dates summer thunderstorm season in west central Florida from May 25 to October 10, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Deadwood and overextended limbs are best dealt with before June.
Do you take emergency tree calls in Citrus County?
Yes. We handle storm-damaged trees, limbs on roofs and trunks across driveways. Tell us what is touching what when you call so we can rank the urgency, and anything in contact with a power line goes to the utility first.
