Springs, salt and second-growth trees
Crystal River grew up around Kings Bay, fed by a cluster of about 50 springs that together make up a first-magnitude system, the second-largest springs group in Florida, discharging around 64 million gallons a day and holding a constant 72 degrees year-round. For tree work, the relevant part is what that means underground. The water table across much of the city sits high, and root systems spread wide and shallow instead of anchoring deep.
A tree that would be solidly rooted forty miles inland can be far less stable here. The city's own history says something about the tree cover too.
Early settlers planted citrus groves across the area until the Big Freeze of 1894 to 1895 wiped out most of them, and the cedar mills that once ran on Kings Bay, including the Dixon mill, which shipped pencil boards north by ship and later by rail, cut through the old-growth cedar stands. What grows here now is largely second-growth and planted landscape, which is why so many of the mature shade trees on residential lots came in at roughly the same time and are reaching the same age together.
