Crystal River was incorporated in 1903 and built around Kings Bay, fed by a cluster of about 50 springs that together make up a first-magnitude system: the second-largest springs group in Florida, discharging around 64 million gallons a day and holding a constant 72 degrees year-round. For tree work, the relevant part is what that means underground: the water table across much of the city sits high, and root systems spread wide and shallow instead of anchoring deep. A tree that would be solidly rooted forty miles inland can be far less stable here. The city's own history says something about the tree cover too.
