Trimming Trees Off the Roof, Pool Cage and Dock in Crystal River, FL

Most trimming calls in Crystal River are about clearance: a limb on the roof, leaves in the pool cage, branches over the dock. Shorten branches back to a side limb instead of stubbing them, take no more than about a quarter to a third of the live canopy at once, and sort out mangroves and the service drop before the saw starts.

Clearance is the most common reason anyone in Crystal River calls about a tree. Broadway Tree Care does tree trimming and pruning across Citrus County, and our page on tree trimming Crystal River FL covers the town itself, from the canal lots on Kings Bay to the older neighborhoods off U.S. 19. This post covers the cuts that get a tree off a roof, a pool cage or a dock without leaving it weaker than it was.

The pruning limits come from Edward Gilman's UF/IFAS guide to training shade trees and UF/IFAS Extension in Hillsborough County. The mangrove rule comes from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the service-drop process from Duke Energy. For salt burn, wind and the other coastal problems, see our earlier post on trimming trees near Kings Bay.

What does clearance trimming look like on a Crystal River lot?

What it hangs over What fits Watch for
Roof and gutters Shorten limbs back to a side branch pointing away from the house Large cuts close to the trunk, which start decay.
Pool cage or lanai screen Lighten the limbs above it and lower pieces by rope Dropped wood tearing the screen.
Driveway and street Raise the canopy by shortening low branches over several years Removing so many low limbs that the tree is all top.
Dock or seawall Ordinary trees: lower pieces by rope. Mangroves: FDEP rules first Mangroves are regulated by the state.
Wire to the house Call the utility first Anything touching an energized line is utility work.

How much of a tree can come off in one trim?

Less than most people expect. Gilman's UF/IFAS guide to training shade trees sets the limit for an established tree at roughly 25 to 35 percent of the live foliage in one session, and it advises keeping branches smaller than half the trunk's diameter and avoiding the removal of large branches, because that starts decay in the trunk. A tree that has grown a big limb over the roof for 20 years often cannot lose it in one visit without trading a clearance problem for a decay problem.

The practical answer is usually to shorten that limb back to a smaller side branch that points away from the house, and come back in a year or two if more needs to come off. UF/IFAS Extension in Hillsborough County makes the same point for storm pruning: reduce the length of weakly attached limbs and balance the crown, rather than cutting out the interior or topping the tree. We do not top trees.

How do you raise a canopy over the driveway?

Slowly, and from the bottom branches up. Gilman's guide recommends shortening low branches early so they never grow big enough to need removing, and, on mature trees, shortening or removing large branches that grow below the lowest limb you want to keep. On an older oak whose lowest limbs already shade the drive, that means picking which limb will be the permanent lowest one and working the branches below it back over more than one visit.

Can you trim mangroves hanging over your dock?

Often yes, with a call first. FDEP says the Mangrove Act gives homeowners an exemption to trim or alter mangroves inside the footprint of their docking structure, and mangrove branches hanging over the dock that block access, as part of maintaining the dock. The same exemption covers mangroves growing into a seawall when the work is maintenance or repair of the seawall. FDEP asks you to contact its district office with a description and photos before you begin.

Away from the dock, the general mangrove rules apply: on a riparian fringe, a homeowner may trim mangroves no more than 10 feet tall without cutting them below 6 feet or stripping their leaves, and taller ones need a professional mangrove trimmer. The cabbage palms, cedars and oaks along the same shoreline are ordinary trees.

Who trims a limb resting on the wire to the house?

Not you, and not us until the utility has been called. Most of Citrus County gets its power from Duke Energy Florida, and part of it from the Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative, so check your bill. Duke Energy says it does only minimal pruning on a service drop, removing weight-bearing limbs from the wire, and that a customer can ask a Duke service technician to disconnect the drop so the homeowner or a tree service can do the work safely. Duke says a technician reconnects it afterward at no charge. Our guide to trees near power lines in Citrus County covers the 10-foot rule and the other kinds of line.

Why do canal lots take longer to trim?

Because there is often nowhere to drop the wood. On the canal lots off Kings Bay the tree is frequently between the house and the water, with a pool cage, a dock or a boat lift underneath. Limbs that would simply fall onto a lawn somewhere else have to be cut in pieces and lowered on a rope, which takes more people and more time. That is the method talking, not the tree, and it is why we price on site.

Do you need a permit for clearance trimming in Crystal River?

Routine pruning rarely does, but check before a heavy cut on a large tree. Inside city limits, the City of Crystal River's Growth Management department (352-795-4216) handles its tree rules. Outside them, the Citrus County Building Division answers at 352-527-5310 or permit@citruscounty.gov. Our guide to tree removal permits in Citrus County covers the county's protected-tree rule.

What should you have ready when you call?

Tell us what the tree hangs over (roof, pool cage, dock, boat lift, the wire to the house), roughly how tall it is, and whether you are inside Crystal River city limits. Say how a truck reaches the tree, and whether the water side is the only open side. Photos from the ground help. We quote on site, in writing, before any work starts, and there is no flat rate because size, species and access set the price. Cards and cash, no financing.

Call your electric utility first. Duke Energy says it removes weight-bearing limbs from service drops and will disconnect the drop on request so a tree service can work, then reconnect it at no charge.
