Tree Service Areas Across Citrus County, FL

Citrus County is small enough to drive across in forty minutes and varied enough that tree work changes completely depending on where you are in it. The coast, the central ridge and the lake country each fail trees in a different way, and knowing which one you are on changes what we look for.

On the Gulf side: Crystal River and Homosassa: the constraints are salt and water. Salt carried in on the wind burns foliage and stresses anything that is not tolerant of it, and the high water table around Kings Bay and the Homosassa River keeps roots shallow. Trees here grow fast and anchor poorly, and storms arrive off open water with nothing to slow them down.

Through the middle of the county: Lecanto, Beverly Hills, Pine Ridge: the ground is higher and drier and the trees are better anchored for it. The problems here are about planting history rather than geology. Beverly Hills in particular went up as a planned community between 1962 and 1972, and its landscape trees went in with the houses, which means an entire neighbourhood's canopy is aging out at the same time.

East around Inverness and Hernando, the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes and the wetlands feeding it dominate. Soil saturates seasonally, root plates lose their grip, and healthy-looking trees rotate out of the ground intact. Inverness has also been a Tree City USA since 1995, which means a real municipal tree ordinance you need to check before cutting anything near a right-of-way.

North across the Withlacoochee, Dunnellon is a different county with different rules and a century of phosphate mining underneath it. We work there, and the single most common problem on jobs up there is somebody assuming Citrus County's permit answer applies.

Permits are the practical reason these distinctions matter to you rather than just to us. Crystal River, Inverness and Dunnellon are incorporated and each sets its own tree ordinance. Homosassa, Lecanto, Beverly Hills and Hernando are unincorporated and fall under Citrus County's rules instead: Hernando notably so, having disincorporated in the 1970s. Inverness carries the strictest regime of the group, backed by Tree City USA standards it has maintained since 1995. A neighbour's answer three miles away is frequently the wrong answer for your parcel.

Access is the other thing that varies more than the map suggests. The coastal communities have canal and waterfront lots where equipment often cannot reach the tree at all. Homosassa softens into genuine marsh heading west. Inverness lakefront parcels are long and narrow with a single path down one side of the house. Beverly Hills lots are compact enough that most removals are rigged rather than felled. Lecanto is the easiest ground in the county to work on. None of that is visible from an address, which is why we look before we quote.

Distance affects scheduling more than price for most of what we do. The county is compact: Crystal River to Inverness is seventeen miles on State Road 44, and Lecanto sits at the midpoint of everything. Dunnellon is the outlier at the northern end, and jobs up there tend to get grouped rather than run as single call-outs. If you are in Dunnellon and not in a hurry, mentioning that gives us room to schedule you efficiently, which helps both of us.

One pattern worth naming, because it affects almost everyone reading this: across the whole county, the failures that do real damage are usually not the ones people are watching. Homeowners worry about the big obvious limb over the roof, and that limb is frequently fine. What comes down is the deadwood nobody looked at, the overextended lateral that has quietly grown into a lever, or the whole tree tipping because the soil let go. The first two are cheap to deal with. The third is why we look at the ground before we look at the canopy.

Storm season shapes the calendar here. Florida's hurricane season runs from the start of June to the end of November, and the useful preparation happens before it rather than during. Deadwood removal, reducing limbs that have grown out too far, and clearing what overhangs the roof genuinely lowers risk. Aggressive interior thinning, which gets sold hard every spring, does not: and there is reasonable evidence it leaves a tree more vulnerable rather than less. After a storm, the sequence across the county is dictated by danger rather than by who called first, and it is worth understanding why. A limb resting on a roof is holding a load that will move: sometimes suddenly: the moment it is cut. A limb hung up in a canopy can come down on its own with no warning. A trunk lying across a driveway is inconvenient but stable. Those three get handled in that order, everywhere, and describing yours accurately on the phone is the single most useful thing you can do for your own place in the queue.

The one hard rule that applies in every town on this list: anything in contact with a power line is the utility's work. A limb touching a conductor can energise the tree and the ground around it, and neither we nor you should be near it. Call the utility, keep everyone well back, and we will take the tree once the line is confirmed clear. That is not caution for its own sake. It is the failure mode that kills people doing this work.
