What belongs on your planting plan?
Sketch the house, driveway, screen enclosure and desired shade position, including the direction of the sun so a patio tree shades the seating area rather than only the lawn.

How much space will the mature tree need?
Allow for the full mature size and root spread; UF/IFAS's tree selection guide recommends matching the species to its eventual size, available root space and, on coastal sites, salt tolerance. A live oak and a smaller ornamental tree should not be treated as interchangeable nursery purchases.
Put the exact species' expected mature height and canopy spread on the sketch rather than assuming repeated pruning will keep a large tree small.

What should you notice after rain?
Photograph standing water after substantial rain and again once the rest of the yard dries, then describe how long it remains during the site assessment.
For a property near the coast, describe any known saltwater flooding or salt exposure; the town name alone cannot settle the choice of tree. A sheltered yard in Crystal River and an exposed waterfront planting position need their own site assessment.
Can the old stump location be reused?
Show us the old stump location before settling on it: Iowa State Extension recommends a new planting position because remaining roots and grindings can interfere with establishment. If disease caused the original removal, that history also matters when selecting the replacement.
Keep the stump grinding and planting scopes clear by asking what residue will remain and who will prepare the soil for a new planting hole.
Who will water the tree after planting?
Decide who will water the tree before scheduling delivery; UF/IFAS notes that newly planted trees need regular watering while roots establish. Its planting guidance also stresses a visible root flare at the correct level and keeping mulch away from the trunk.
Ask for aftercare instructions for the actual tree and planting date, including root-ball checks, changes after rainfall, current watering restrictions and who to contact if the leaves decline.
